Porlamar ist eine Stadt auf der venezolanischen Insel Margarita. Es ist die größte Stadt und wirtschaftliches Zentrum der Insel.

Geschichte

Im Jahr 1526 schickte die Gouverneurin Isabel Manrique die Gesandten Pedro de Villardiga und Pedro Alegría nach Margarita, um eine Festung in der Guaraguaobucht zu errichten. Gegen 1536 gründete der Priester Francisco de Villacorta das Dorf von Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in der Nähe. Im Jahr 1545 war die Festung fertig. Das Dorf wurde von Piraten 1555 und von Lope de Aguirre 1561 zerstört. Die Einwohner zogen zum Tal Santa Lucía um, wo nun La Asunción entstehen würde. Es blieb eine Siedlung, die als Puerto de la Mar oder Puerto Viejo genannt war. Daraus entwickelte sich langsam das Dorf von Porlamar.

Infrastruktur

12 km südwestlich von Porlamar (außerhalb des Gemeindegebietes) befindet sich der internationale Flughafen Isla de Margarita, in dessen Nähe befindet sich das Gefängnis von San Antonio.
